Harvey Weinstein’s rape trial ends in mistrial-jury deadlocked
Harvey Weinstein’s rape retrial ended in a mistrial Friday after the jury deadlocked in the closely watched #MeToo-era case. While the former Hollywood mogul has been convicted of other sex crimes on two U.S. coasts and remains behind bars, the mistrial leaves the New York rape charge in limbo after three trials.
Nine jurors fell on the side of not guilty. Three supported a guilty verdict. The jury sent a note to the judge stating: “We feel that no one is going to change where they stand.” Jessica Mann, the woman at the center of the charge, testified that Weinstein raped her at a Manhattan hotel in 2013. Weinstein’s defense argued the relationship was consensual. Mann said in a statement after the mistrial that it “doesn’t in any way detract from the truth I told,” adding that she relived painful moments and faced public attacks while seeking justice because “the power of predators remains too great.”
Weinstein was first convicted of assaulting Mann in 2020. An appeals court then overturned that verdict. Jury deliberations broke down at a 2025 retrial. That paved the way for this year’s retrial — making this the third time a jury has failed to convict on this specific charge. Weinstein, now 74, has been incarcerated since 2020 and remains imprisoned on a separate California conviction for rape and sexual assault. A hearing is set for June 24 to determine whether prosecutors will pursue a fourth trial. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said his office was disappointed and would consult with Mann before deciding next steps.
Your Summer Flight Is 24 Percent More Expensive Than Last Year — And Prices May Not Come Back Down
Jet fuel prices have risen more than 80 percent since the U.S. and Israel launched their war on Iran in late February, prompting airlines to hike fares, reduce their schedules, or both. Domestic airfares in the U.S. have risen 24 percent year-on-year according to Kayak. International fares from the U.S. are up 16 percent on average. Airlines have cut 9.3 million seats for the period of June 1 through September 30, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium. Spirit Airlines permanently ceased operations, widely blamed on soaring fuel costs.
The price increases are not evenly distributed. Jet fuel typically accounts for 20 to 30 percent of airlines’ total operating costs — making it a significant driver of airfare, according to Hayley Berg, lead economist at Hopper. Budget carriers are hit harder because fuel represents a larger share of their costs. Fares to Europe have risen approximately 9 percent while some Europe-Asia routes have risen as much as fivefold. Even if a peace agreement were reached today it would still take weeks if not months before relief would come to jet fuel supply and prices, according to travel industry analysts. Some fares may never return to pre-conflict levels — historically baggage fees have never decreased after an increase.
The Iran Ceasefire Is Holding — Barely — As Both Sides Continue to Exchange Fire
The April 8 ceasefire between the United States and Iran remains in place but is on “life support,” per President Trump, amid intermittent fighting since May 4 that highlights the potential for a resumption of broader conflict. Iran attacked U.S. forces more than 10 times since the ceasefire’s start, according to Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine at a press briefing. The U.S. military disabled an Iranian-flagged tanker in the Gulf of Oman last week when it attempted to transit toward an Iranian port. Iran struck targets in the UAE on May 4 in what appeared to be its first attacks since the ceasefire.
Limited U.S.-Iran diplomatic engagement has not yielded a comprehensive agreement on Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs as of mid-May. The war has cost the United States approximately $29 billion in operational costs to date, according to Acting Pentagon Comptroller Jules Hurst’s congressional testimony on May 12. The House and Senate have collectively rejected nine separate measures introduced under the War Powers Resolution to end hostilities with Iran since early March. Trump has stated he will continue the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports while diplomatic talks continue.
This is inaccurate. The jury deadlocked — meaning it could not reach a unanimous verdict — and the judge declared a mistrial. A mistrial is not an acquittal. Weinstein was not found not guilty. The charge remains unresolved and prosecutors can choose to bring it to trial a fourth time. The June 24 hearing will determine whether they do. Weinstein remains imprisoned on separate rape and sexual assault convictions from California and from a separate New York case. He has not been released and is not free.
FIFA announced this week that the official song for the 2026 World Cup — hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico — is Dai Dai, a collaboration between Colombian pop star Shakira and Nigerian Afrobeats artist Burna Boy. It is Shakira’s fourth song associated with a World Cup, following her 2010 anthem Waka Waka which became one of the most streamed World Cup songs in history. The 2026 tournament opens June 11 in Mexico City and runs through the final on July 19 in New Jersey. It is the first World Cup to feature 48 teams and the first hosted across three countries simultaneously. Shakira said in a statement that the song was written to capture the feeling of joy that brings the whole world together regardless of where you are from.
