More than 60 lawsuits were filed challenging the 2020 presidential election results. Courts rejected nearly all of them. Judges appointed by Trump, by other Republican presidents, and by Democratic presidents all reached the same conclusion. HOW MANY CASES WERE FILED
More than 60 lawsuits were filed challenging the 2020 presidential election results in courts across the country. The cases were brought by the Trump campaign, allied organizations, and individual supporters.
WHAT HAPPENED TO THOSE CASES
Courts rejected nearly all of them. A group of prominent conservatives including former U.S. senators, Republican lawyers, and retired federal judges examined 64 cases brought by Trump and his supporters and published a report titled Lost, Not Stolen: The Conservative Case That Trump Lost and Biden Won the 2020 Presidential Election.
Their confirmed findings: 30 of the 64 cases included hearings on the merits. Trump and his supporters won only one Pennsylvania case involving far too few votes to overturn the results. Those efforts failed because of a lack of evidence and not because of erroneous rulings or unfair judges.
THE CONFIRMED CLAIM THAT COURTS DISMISSED THE CASES WITHOUT HEARING THE EVIDENCE
A widely shared claim holds that courts did not have the courage to hear the evidence and dismissed cases on procedural grounds rather than evaluating the claims.
PolitiFact examined this confirmed claim. Of the cases reviewed by the conservative group, 30 included hearings on the merits. Courts did evaluate evidence. When they did they found it insufficient.
In Nevada the district court judge wrote that Trump allies did not prove under any standard of proof that illegal votes were cast and counted or legal votes were not counted at all due to voter fraud. The judge noted the ruling was reached having considered, without limitation, all evidence submitted to the court.
In Arizona a federal court found the plaintiffs' claims were largely based on anonymous witnesses, hearsay, and irrelevant analysis of unrelated elections.
In Pennsylvania a federal appeals panel of three judges each appointed by Republican presidents rejected the Trump campaign's challenge. Judge Stephanos Bibas, appointed by Trump, wrote: Charges of unfairness are serious. But calling an election unfair does not make it so. Charges require specific allegations and then proof. We have neither here.
THE CONFIRMED ROLE OF TRUMP-APPOINTED JUDGES
Multiple cases that reached courts presided over by judges appointed by Trump himself were decided against the Trump campaign. Former Representative Liz Cheney, a Republican, stated publicly: There were over 60 court cases where judges, including judges appointed by President Trump and other Republican presidents, looked at the evidence in many cases and said there is not widespread fraud.
THE CONFIRMED ROLE OF TRUMP'S OWN ATTORNEY GENERAL

Earlier this year FBI agents raided elections offices in Fulton County Georgia seizing materials from the 2020 election. Tulsi Gabbard traveled to Atlanta to oversee execution of the search warrant. Trump will deliver a primetime address Thursday July 17 at 9 PM confirmed by AP and KPBS. He has described it as really, really big news. The Washington Post citing anonymous sources reported the speech may note claims that China accessed U.S. voter data and could include allegations of foreign interference in the 2020 election. PART TWO: NONCITIZEN VOTING, WHAT THE DATA ACTUALLY SHOWS
IS IT ILLEGAL FOR NONCITIZENS TO VOTE
Yes. It is a federal crime for noncitizens to vote in federal elections. Confirmed penalties include fines, up to one year in federal prison, deportation, and permanent bar from citizenship. The Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 strengthened these penalties. Noncitizens who vote create a permanent government record of a federal crime that appears in standard immigration record checks.
HOW RARE IS NONCITIZEN VOTING, THE CONSERVATIVE HERITAGE FOUNDATION'S OWN DATA
The Heritage Foundation is a conservative think tank that has campaigned against what it calls voter fraud. It maintains a database of confirmed election fraud cases. The Heritage Foundation's own database documents 77 confirmed cases of noncitizens voting across more than two decades of U.S. elections, confirmed by the Bipartisan Policy Center's analysis of that database.
The American Immigration Council reviewed the same Heritage database and found just 10 confirmed cases specifically involving undocumented immigrants voting. An additional case was found outside the database.
In a country of more than 330 million people casting hundreds of millions of votes across multiple elections over 20 years, the conservative organization most focused on documenting voter fraud found 77 confirmed noncitizen voting cases total.
WHAT STATE INVESTIGATIONS FOUND
Multiple Republican-led states conducted formal investigations into noncitizen voting and found it virtually nonexistent.
Utah: The state's top election official initiated a monthslong review of approximately 2.1 million registered voters. She found one confirmed noncitizen. That person, while registered, had never voted.
Idaho: A state of one million voters ran similar tests in 2024 and found 36 very likely registered noncitizens.
Georgia: A 2024 audit of 8.2 million registrations found 20 registered noncitizens.
Montana: Found 23 possible noncitizen registrants out of approximately 785,000 registered voters.
Louisiana: Found 390 noncitizen registrants out of 2.9 million, 79 of whom had voted in at least one election over several decades.
Ohio: Confirmed that noncitizen voting is exceedingly rare. None of the confirmed cases affected the outcome of an election, the Ohio Secretary of State confirmed.
Nevada: The Republican Party filed a 2020 complaint alleging 3,987 noncitizens voted. The Nevada Secretary of State's investigation found the allegation failed to account for noncitizens who had naturalized and become legal voters between getting their driver's license and the election.
The Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank whose research on immigration tends to be cited by conservatives, published a confirmed analysis in February 2026 titled Trump's Claims About Noncitizens Voting Are False. We Can Prove It. The analysis concluded that investigations consistently find noncitizen voting virtually nonexistent and that constant talk of noncitizen voting is more likely about scoring political points and bolstering fundraising.
WHY NONCITIZENS ARE UNLIKELY TO VOTE EVEN IF THEY WANTED TO
The Brennan Center for Justice confirmed the following incentive structure. A noncitizen who votes risks deportation, fines, up to a year in prison, and permanent bar from citizenship. The reward is one incremental vote. The risk creates a permanent paper trail of a federal crime that appears in all immigration record checks. As the Brennan Center confirmed: it is not surprising that noncitizen voting is rare. Many undocumented individuals are reluctant to interact with government officials for any reason.
HOW STATES PREVENT NONCITIZENS FROM VOTING
States cross-check voter registration information against state DMV records and federal databases including the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements program administered by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. The National Voter Registration Act of 1993 requires states to regularly maintain voter rolls. Twenty-four states require photo identification to vote. When states conduct citizenship reviews of voter rolls they regularly find that early claims of large numbers of noncitizen registrants are almost certain to be a misleading overestimation, confirmed by the Center for Election Innovation and Research February 2026.

WHAT THIS MEANS IN PRACTICE
Each state sets its own voter registration requirements. Each state sets its own voter identification rules. Each state decides whether to allow early voting, mail-in voting, and drop boxes. Each state runs its own election administration through locally elected officials. Certified election results in each state are confirmed by state officials, state courts, and in the case of presidential elections the state's electoral votes are certified by Congress.
The 2020 election results were certified by election officials in every state including Republican-led states. They were certified by Republican secretaries of state including Brad Raffensperger in Georgia and Katie Hobbs in Arizona. They were confirmed by courts including Trump-appointed judges. They were confirmed by Trump's own Attorney General. They were confirmed by the Electoral College. They were certified by Congress on January 7 2021.
WHAT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT CAN AND CANNOT DO
Congress can set some rules for federal elections under Article I Section 4. The Help America Vote Act of 2002 established minimum election administration standards. The National Voter Registration Act requires states to maintain voter rolls. Congress cannot override state-certified election results or direct state election officials on how to run elections.
